This is an instance within the Flower Essences series where the background of the wild flower and the shot itself all line up behind a single assertion. The Bristle Thistle is generally considered an invasive species because of how it takes over habitat from other wild flowers, all but choking them out.

The name for this print, The Plant, takes its inspiration from the Venus Flytrap in the musical Little Shop of Horror. Because the Thistle is not totally opened yet, there is already the energy of pulling anything in toward its dark center. This sense is heightened by placing the focus on the upper most spines, as they reach out to grab you. This in turn makes the center of the flower a little more ominous, while further softening the outer leaves that radiate beyond the photo with the same inward pull.

This print is equally at home in a child’s room because of its surface playfulness. Which, acts as an ode to the opening of the musical. Or, place it in a more formal setting where the deeply hued purples and greens will add a sense of gravitas to the space. While the intent of The fully gown Plant as it opens outward continues Pulling You In.
