In the Bee Moments™ series I’m always trying to capture a particular part of a bee’s story. Unfortunately, when bees are foraging deeply in fluted flowers, the only moment to capture is the bee’s bum. If you’re that lucky.

What I love about about this particular shot is it captures the Bumble Bee just after landing on a Small Flowered Penstemon, but just before it’s stuck deep inside the flower. You can feel the anticipation as the bee quietly says to itself, “Almost. Almost there.” The contrast of gentle blues and greens really helps the yellow and orange of the Bumble Bee stand out. While the clarity of the bee’s focus into the flower and the slight motion of the forward leg relay its next move. The slightly distant branches on the bottom and a stack of flowers on the left, frame the detailed texture of the bee’s back and foreground wing. As the mirroring of the back wing by the background plants, adds depth and drama to the scene.

Whether as part of a diptych with the Climber Mid print, where a Honey bee and Bumble Bee look past each other. Or as the feature photo in a room with similar soft blues and greens. The desire of this Bumble Bee to, “Let the pollen gathering begin”, will inspire wherever it is hung.
