I was struck by the nature of both this flower and its lower leaves Popping out of the surrounding dense, somewhat marshy grass, to almost announce the world, “Here I am, Look at me.” After I got home and did a little research on the rarity of the Wood Lily, I realized I had inadvertently captured one of my first photo within the Flower Essences™ series. 

The red orange of the flower versus the dark green of the surrounding grass with its crosscutting horizontal nature holds a strong contrast to the vertical energy of the flower, and heightens the feeling of it Popping out of the ground to be seen. I built on this contrast by tipping the focal plain down toward the forward most petals, while I placed the focus on the pistol and surrounding stamen. This creates an energy that draws the viewer’s eye into the front of the flower, then up and out through the center. The loose crop, slightly clipping the 4th and 6th side petals, then completes the Wood Lily’s intention of Popping well beyond the photo.
